How was the Stanwyck biography, darling? I wasn't able to get it myself yet, so I've been reading any reviews of it that I could find - but your opinion would be the one I would trust the most. :) So please add me to the list of those hoping that you'll come back for (if not permanently, which would be awesome but I def. get your reasons not to) a bit to post your thoughts on it. Thanks! <3
wow =”) thanks for valuing my opinion, dearest gray face. I finished it a couple of days ago after about 3 weeks. It certainly is the most comprehensive book written about Missy and overall I’m pleased.
I do have to point out a few things that bothered me a lot, first and foremost the lack of focus !!!!!!!!!! Wilson completely forgets about her main subject and goes on to babble about people who are only loosely tied to Stanwyck…..3+ pages about the Garbo/Gilbert relationship really ? and what even is up with that bit about someone who lost their husband on the Titanic ??? I guess she lacked a bit of modesty and at times was just trying to show off, she does have a lot of *knowledge* sighs….
The way she describes movie plots extensively, not only Stanwyck’s but Fay’s and Taylor’s as well, it’s also quite annoying and unnecessary. The book needs a lot of editing to put it mildly….
But I guess what bothered me most was her somewhat cold and distant relationship with Stanwyck. I mean I was not expecting a fan book because god knows those can be awful but Wilson lacks sympathy for Missy….. She mostly seems impartial to her personal life, which is cool because the reader is free to make up his own mind, but one can’t help but notice her siding with Dion….even though Stanwyck’s, admittedly, strict bringing up of the child was not uncommon and certainly the boy’s bad behavior (shoplifting at 7 K) had a lot to do with it .
Idk I mean I was expecting more, I think ??? There are very few things on the book that I didn’t already know and on some subjects I was left confused ( Was she afraid of horses or not ? She had an abortion OK but when, how ? Bob was in love with her, awesome, but why does she later on claims that he had doubts on their wedding day ?)
I’d give it a 3.5 out of 5 and I’m still looking forward to volume 2…… just not as much =/
PS: the story about Bob’s sursprise birthday party involving an embarrassed and naked Stany made my life hahaha
